Adapter plugs allow electrical connections up to 240 volts. An adapter plug does NOT change the current or voltage (this requires a converter) unless your appliance is dual voltage. Check to make sure your hair dryer, curling iron, electric razor and other appliances are dual voltage before you leave on your trip. Non-grounded adapters may NOT be used with appliances that have grounded plugs; for these you will need a grounded adapter.

Many of our customers find it handy to have multiple adaptors while traveling - either to run several appliances simultaneously or simply as a backup. If you think you will need additional adapters for your trip, you can also purchase individual adapters.

Cycles: 50 Hz vs. 60 Hz.

France operates on 230 volt electricity and is generated at 50Hz (Cycles) Alternating Current. United States 110-120 volt electricity is generated at 60Hz (Cycles) Alternating Current. This difference in cycles may cause the motor in your 60Hz United States appliance to operate slightly slower when used on 50Hz foreign electricity. Most modern electronic equipment including battery chargers, Lenovo, HP, Asus, Toshiba computers, iPods, etc., will not be affected by the difference in cycle.  Check to make sure your hair dryer, curling iron, hair straightener, electric razor, electric water heater and other electrics are dual voltage.  If your electrics are not dual voltage you will need a converter to take along your appliances.

Computers and Apple Products

If you are traveling overseas with a Toshiba, HP, Lenovo, Asus, laptop or Apple device such as an iPad, chances are you won’t need a voltage converter. Most laptops are multi-voltage and will operate on voltages ranging from 100 to 240 volts. However, computers do need to make safe connections to foreign power systems and a surge protector is recommended and you will still need an adapter to use your plug. Bonjour Paris, Avignon and Lourdes!

Geography

France is located in Western Europe, bordering the Bay of Biscay and English Channel, between Belgium and Spain, southeast of the UK; bordering the Mediterranean Sea, between Italy and Spain and its area is slightly less than the size of Texas. France is the largest West European nation Its climate generally cool winters and mild summers, but mild winters and hot summers along the Mediterranean; occasional strong, cold, dry, north-to-northwesterly wind known as mistral.

On average, France receives 31 inches (786 mm) per year.  Spring is the wettest time of year in France.

France gets plenty of winter snow in the mountains for skiing and other winter sports.

Paris receives 24 inches (607 mm) of precipitation annually.  July is typically the rainiest month that Paris experiences. For more information on weather in France visit France's official website.

The terrain is mostly flat plains or gently rolling hills in north and west; remainder is mountainous, especially Pyrenees in south, Alps in east.

Currency

Currency in France is the Euro (EUR). Credit cards are widely accepted throughout France. Foreign currency and travelers cheques can be exchanged in most banks; however ATMs offer a better exchange rate and are more convenient. Travelers cheques are accepted in most hotels and restaurants.

Staying Connected

The telephone system in France is highly developed with extensive cable and microwave radio relay; extensive use of fiber-optic cable; domestic satellite system. Cell phone coverage is great. When travelling to France you will want to take an international or unlocked cell phone with a prepaid France SIM card. You can also contact your mobile service provider to set up an international calling plan. You will need an adapter to charge your phone. Most cell phone battery rechargers should be multi-voltage, therefore will not require a converter. If the charger says 100-240 volts, 50-60 cycles then your charger in multi-voltage.

France has 16.840 million internet hosts and over 45.262 million internet users. Internet access is widely available in hotels, internet café and Wi-Fi hotspots. When traveling with your laptop or iPad you will need an adapter to charge your device.

Transportation

The main international airport in France is the Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris.  If you choose not to fly into Paris, there are over two dozen International airports scattered throughout the country including Biarritz Airport serving Biarritz, Figari Sud-Corse Aiport  serving the island of Corsica, and Toulon-Hyeres Airport serving Toulon.  For information on passing through customs in France visit France's official website.

Getting around the main cities can be as simple as taking the train or the tram, however if you traveling in rural parts you may want to rent a car.  The buses serving small towns can be slow and some rural areas may not have a bus system at all.  Keep in mind that renting a car can be pricey and so can the parking tickets, however renting a car is the best way to see more remote parts of France.

Bicycling around France can be a lovely way to tour different cities.  Keep in mind while cycling that many roads do not have sufficient shoulders for cyclers, so you may often be cycling with traffic.  There are bicycle laws in France that you must obey for your own safety.  Your bike must have two working brakes, a bell, a red reflector on the back and yellow reflectors on the pedals.  After dusk you must have a white light turned on in the front and a red light shining in the rear of the bike.
